Get Involved > Hunger

Fight Hunger

  • Sort and pack food and other items at the Regional Food Bank (965 Albany Shaker Road, Latham) for distribution to the food pantries. Better yet, organize a group to go on a regular basis. Other volunteer opportunities include helping with office work or working on the Patroon Land Farm. Contact www.rfbneny.com, or call 786-3691.
  • Donate food and personal care items to our local food pantry. Donated items may be placed in the baskets at each entrance to the Sanctuary and outside the church office. See the Sunday bulletins and First Word for specific items that are in short supply.
  • Walk in the CROP Walk in May. Bring a friend! See First Word and Sunday bulletins in April for information
  • Volunteer at the Capital District Community Gardens, a private non-profit community service organization that has been helping residents of Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady Counties improve their neighborhoods through community gardening, healthy food access and urban greening programs for more than 30 years. CDCG also runs and operates the Veggie Mobile, a mobile market that sells fresh produce at an affordable price to residents of senior citizen housing and low income neighborhoods.

Although many of its programs run spring through fall, CDCG offers numerous year round volunteer opportunities for local community members. Some ways church members can get involved include helping out in a garden cleanup, collecting and delivering excess produce to local food pantries for our Squash Hunger program, volunteering on the Veggie Mobile, or helping out a fundraising event. A list of volunteer needs is sent out through a biweekly email. Contact Mara Estes, Outreach Coordinator, at 274-8685, for information and to be added to the volunteer e-mail list. Or, contact www.cdcg.org
